FAQ

How much should I tip?

It depends heavily on the country. In the US, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with smaller tips for delivery and counter service. Tipping norms vary a lot elsewhere — use the selector below to check average tips by scenario for popular countries with a tipping culture.

ScenarioAverage tip
Restaurant (sit-down)18–20%
Cafe / counter service10–15%
Taxi / rideshare10–15%
Food delivery10–15%
Hotel housekeeping$2–5 per night
How do you calculate a tip on a bill?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage as a decimal (18% = 0.18). For a $50 bill at 18%, the tip is $50 × 0.18 = $9.00, making the total $59.00.

How do I split a tip between multiple people?

Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide the total by the number of people. This calculator does that automatically — just change the “Number of people” value to your group size.
